Chapter Nine

Being a Travian officer’s pet wasn’t going to kill Joel. Boredom might. With his fever broken, he felt immensely better, yet Arath had dictated that he remain in bed until he regained full strength. Apparently, Travians recovered from illness almost immediately, and Joel’s lingering weakness concerned his master. While the worry was kind of touching, Joel still resented being dictated to. He was an adult, after all, not some kid who needed looking after. Not that anyone had bothered to in a long time. After his mother had died, he’d welcomed his father’s indifference. The alternative had typically been irrational anger and beatings. The last vestiges of the little boy he’d once been, however, basked in Arath’s attention. The unwanted reaction made Joel that much more cross with his situation.

Even with Wen’s regular visits, the time dragged on. What passed for Travian entertainment mystified him. Arath had given him a type of tablet on which he could watch various videos and even live performances given on the station. Instead of a plot to follow or even simply music or dance, everything seemed to be a combination of all three. Travian actors said things that appeared to be random thoughts. The music was just so much screeching to Joel’s ears, and the dancing could have been mistaken for seizures.

This duty shift was different. Joel lay propped up on the bed waiting for a holographic image of Wid to appear. Because the Travians didn’t use pillows in bed, Wen had rigged a bolster behind Joel’s upper body that Joel found pretty comfortable. A shiny globe had descended from the ceiling, and Wen fiddled with some kind of handheld remote device. The visit from Wid had come as a gift from Arath. During their embarrassing night in the pool, the commander had made the thrilling offer, except Joel worried that the kindness was a form of bribe. He still couldn’t believe he’d sat naked, curled around an equally naked Travian male, agreeing to try to craft some type of relationship with him. Maybe he was just tired of fighting everyone and everything—his father, the establishment, the Travians, his whole fucking life, for that matter.

A cloud of lights shimmered in the middle of the room. “Here he comes,” Wen said, his voice enthusiastic. In the next instant, Wid’s form solidified, almost as if he were truly there.

A jolt of warmth and relief hit him. He hadn’t realized how much he missed his friend until that moment. To see a human face again made him feel better, as well.

“Hey,” he said, almost shyly.

Wid grinned. “Hey, yourself. It’s good to see you. I heard you’ve been sick,” he added with a frown.

Joel shrugged. “Yeah, I got some alien superbug or something. I’m fine now, though. Just a little wobbly still.” He glanced over at the Travian cadet. “Oh, this is Wen. He’s keeping me company and mostly out of trouble.”

Wen bowed to Wid. “I am honored to meet the pet of Captain Kell.”

Wid gave the alien a wry grin.
